Planning a visit to Pearl Harbor is a powerful and emotional part of any trip to Oahu. But one of the most important questions travelers ask is: How long is the Pearl Harbor tour? Whether you’re short on time or looking for a full-day, immersive experience, this guide will help you choose the right option based on your schedule, interests, and travel goals.

Quick Answer: How Long Is the Pearl Harbor Tour?

Pearl Harbor tours typically range from 3 to 8 hours, depending on how many sites you plan to visit and how deep you want to go.

Here are the three most popular options:

  • Option 1: USS Arizona Memorial, Drive Through Punchbowl National Cemetery, and Landmarks (3–4 hours)
  • Perfect for short visits. Includes a guided visit to the Arizona Memorial, a narrated drive through Punchbowl National Cemetery, and highlights of historic Honolulu like the King Kamehameha Statue and Iolani Palace.
  • Option 2: Pearl Harbor Full Experience (Approximately 7–8 hours)
  • A comprehensive Oahu private tour that includes the USS Arizona, USS Missouri, USS Bowfin Submarine, Pacific Aviation Museum, a drive through Punchbowl National Cemetery, and visits to Honolulu’s historic landmarks.
  • Option 3: Pearl Harbor History Expert Tour (6–7 hours)
  • A private, deeply immersive experience led by Billy Crowe, a U.S. Army veteran and former National Park Service interpreter. Billy has personally spoken with dozens of survivors and is one of the few people alive with firsthand dive experience on the USS Arizona and USS Utah.

Key Factors That Influence Pearl Harbor Tour Length

1. Which Sites You Visit

Pearl Harbor includes several major landmarks:

  • USS Arizona Memorial

A moving tribute built above the sunken remains of the battleship destroyed during the attack on December 7, 1941. It honors the 1,177 crewmen who lost their lives and remains the emotional heart of Pearl Harbor.

  • USS Missouri Battleship

The "Mighty Mo" is where World War II officially ended with the signing of the Japanese surrender. Visitors can walk the decks of this massive battleship and stand on the exact spot where history changed forever.

  • USS Bowfin Submarine

Nicknamed the "Avenger of the Pacific," this WWII submarine lets visitors climb aboard and explore the cramped quarters where 80 sailors lived and fought beneath the ocean’s surface.

  • Pacific Aviation Museum

Housed in original hangars that survived the attack, this museum showcases vintage aircraft and tells the story of aviation’s critical role in the Pacific during WWII.

  • Pearl Harbor Visitor Center
The starting point for most visits, featuring indoor and outdoor exhibits, a 23-minute documentary film, and sweeping views of the harbor and memorial. Admission is free and it's run by the National Park Service.

Touring all of them takes a full day. The
Pearl Harbor Full Experience is designed to cover every major site while still allowing time for reflection, learning, and sightseeing. The History Expert Tour focuses on fewer sites but delivers unmatched storytelling and historical access.

2. Type of Tour

  • Option 1 is great for those on a tighter schedule who still want a meaningful visit
  • Option 2 offers the most comprehensive experience available
  • Option 3, the Pearl Harbor History Expert Tour, delivers deep emotional impact and historical insight not found in standard tours

3. Your Travel Schedule

  • Cruise passengers often choose Option 1 (3–4 hours)
  • Visitors with a later flight frequently opt for Option 2 (7–8 hours) for a complete final day.
  • History lovers regularly book Option 3 to spend more time in meaningful conversation and reflection

Common Misconceptions About Tour Duration

“You Can See Everything in 2 Hours”

Even visiting just the USS Arizona includes the ferry ride, documentary film, and time at the memorial. Most visitors
need at least 3 hours for this experience alone.

“More Time Means a More Exhausting Day”

Our tours are private, comfortable, and paced around you. Guests who choose the
History Expert Tour often say it felt like a conversation with a friend, not a long day on their feet.

“All Tours Are the Same”

The History Expert Tour is completely unique. Your guide, Billy Crowe, has participated in internment dives, spoken personally with dozens of survivors, and brings firsthand context you simply won’t find anywhere else.

Visiting the Battleship Missouri on a Pearl Harbor tour is not just viewing a ship. It is experiencing one of America’s most powerful historical symbols. It is the site where Japan formally surrendered, ending World War II. It served in WWII, Korea, and Desert Storm before being decommissioned in 1992. It offers an immersive visitor experience, from its massive 16-inch gun turrets to the surrender deck. “We walked where WWII ended and stood beneath guns that shook the ocean. The USS Arizona Memorial is located in the waters of Pearl Harbor , about 10 miles west of Waikiki in Honolulu. It is accessible only by boat, which departs from the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center at: 1 Arizona Memorial Place, Honolulu, HI 96818 (GPS-friendly address; parking is available) The memorial itself is a white, floating structure anchored directly above the sunken hull of the USS Arizona . It does not touch the ship. Instead, it spans the midsection, allowing visitors to look down into the water and see parts of the wreck. A wall inside the shrine room lists the names of all those who lost their lives aboard. From a practical standpoint: You’ll arrive at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center first. After checking in, you’ll board a Navy-operated boat for a short ride across the harbor. The entire program, including the boat ride and time on the memorial, takes about 75 minutes.
