Experience the history, honor the heroes, and explore Oahu’s most iconic site
When you think of Pearl Harbor, you probably picture battleships, memorials, and a big turning point in world history. But behind those images are real people, powerful moments, and stories you might not hear unless you visit. Whether you're a history buff, someone planning your first trip to Oahu, or just curious about what makes this place so special, here are 13 interesting facts that help bring Pearl Harbor to life.

1. Pearl Harbor was once known as Wai Momi
Before it became a naval base, the area was called Wai Momi by Native Hawaiians, which means “Water of Pearls.” It was a peaceful estuary full of oysters and fish, and it held deep cultural and spiritual meaning for the local community.
2. The attack lasted less than two hours
On the morning of December 7, 1941, the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor started around 7:55 a.m. and was over in just 90 minutes. In that short time, more than 2,400 Americans lost their lives, and over 1,000 were wounded.
3. Oil still leaks from the USS Arizona
The USS Arizona, which sank during the attack, still rests at the bottom of the harbor. More than 80 years later, it continues to leak small amounts of oil. Visitors call these drops the “tears of the Arizona.” Many believe the ship will keep releasing oil until the last survivor passes.
4. The USS Arizona Memorial doesn’t touch the ship
The white structure you see when you visit isn’t built on top of the battleship. It floats above the sunken remains. This design keeps the ship undisturbed while giving visitors a place to reflect and remember.
5. You can stand where World War II officially ended
Across the harbor from the Arizona is the Battleship Missouri. This is the ship where Japan officially surrendered on September 2, 1945. You can visit the exact spot where the surrender documents were signed and walk the same decks where history was made.
6. There’s a real World War II submarine you can explore
The USS Bowfin, nicknamed the “Pearl Harbor Avenger,” launched exactly one year after the attack. It served in nine war patrols during World War II. Today, you can tour the submarine, see the torpedo rooms, and walk through the crew’s tight living quarters.
7. Ford Island was at the center of the attack
Ford Island sits right in the middle of Pearl Harbor and was home to aircraft hangars and battleships at the time of the attack. It took heavy damage and played a central role in the events of that day. Today, you can visit the island during guided tours.
8. The Aviation Museum is inside real WWII hangars
The Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum is located in original hangars that were hit during the attack. Inside, you’ll find bullet holes still visible in the windows, along with restored aircraft and exhibits that cover the history of air combat in the Pacific.
9. Pearl Harbor is still an active military base
While it's one of Hawaii's top tourist destinations, Pearl Harbor is also a working base known as Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. It supports both Navy and Air Force operations and plays a key role in U.S. defense in the Pacific.
10. Some survivors choose to be buried with their shipmates
Many survivors of the USS Arizona have requested to have their ashes placed back inside the ship after they pass. Divers from the U.S. Navy carry out this solemn ceremony so these veterans can rejoin their crewmates for eternity.
11. You can visit all the major sites in one day
If you plan ahead or join a private guided tour, you can comfortably visit the USS Arizona Memorial, the Battleship Missouri, the Bowfin Submarine Museum, and the Aviation Museum in one full day. It’s a powerful, full-circle experience.
12. Pearl Harbor is one of the most visited sites in Hawaii
More than 1.8 million people visit Pearl Harbor each year. It’s one of the most significant historic sites in the United States and a must-see if you’re visiting Oahu.
13. Having a guide makes all the difference
Sure, you can explore on your own, but having a knowledgeable local guide makes the visit so much richer. They’ll share the stories you won’t find on signs and help you understand the deeper meaning behind what you’re seeing.
